Mineral Physics & Experimental Petrology Laboratory

PI moved to Geology and Geophysics Department at Texas A&M University starting from August 1st, 2022.

The University of New Mexico mineral physics and experimental petrology laboratory hosts several state-of-the-art analytical instruments capable of measuring various chemical and physical properties of Earth and Planetary Materials at extreme pressure (P)-temperature (T) conditions.

Our research interests include:

  • Structure, composition, and dynamics of the Earth and planetary interiors

  • Structure, evolution and dynamic process of the lithosphere and subducting slabs in the Earth's interior

  • Phase transformations, elasticity, crystallography, spectroscopy

  • Phonon dispersion and phononic crystals

We welcome collaborations in various disciplines that not limited to Earth and planetary sciences. We also provide educational research training opportunities with hands-on instruction for high-school, undergraduate and graduate students on sample preparation, data collection, and analysis, as well as interpretation of results.

If you are interested in high-school/undergraduate/graduate student opportunities or collaboration please contact the PI Jin Zhang at jinzhang@unm.edu.
